IFILM NEWS

Disney's College Road Trip (vfx by Digital Pictures iloura, Furious FX and RotoFactory), with Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symone grossed $14M in its first weekend in the US! Roger Donaldson's The Bank Job was also released in the US to a healthy box office reception. Opening at 2nd place currently College Road Trip occupies 7th place in the box office race and The Bank Job has moved from 5th into 3rd place.

iloura's contribution in College Road Trip involved animating a 100% digital pig - high on caffeine hanging from chandeliers and generally creating havoc.

The Bank Job required detailed matte painting work recreating the infamous bank of the 1980's and general scene enhancements throughout the film.

Dulce de Leche

Dulce de leche in Spanish ('milk candy'), is a milk-based syrup, popular across Latin America. It is prepared by slowly heating sweetened condensed milk to create a product similar in taste to caramel.

Dulce de leche is used to flavor candies or other sweet foods, such as cakes, cookies or ice cream, as well as flan. It is also popular spread on toast, and makes a star appearance in the famous Banoffi Pie. Confiture de lait (a French version of Dulce de Leche) is commonly served with fromage blanc.

METHOD

Find a deep saucepan or casserole that will go in the oven.

Put into it as many tins as will fit. (the tins must be UNOPENED - can't stress this enough!). It will be worth doing several at a time - remember, once reduced the dulce de leche will be one sixth the size of its original volume.

Cover the tins with water and bring to the boil

Cover with a lid and transfer to the oven set to gas mark 1 / 140 C (less for fan assisted)

Cook for 3 1/2 hours

Using a lid to cover the pot means there is no danger of the water boiling dry and being in a more controlled temperature you get a more consistent result.

Lift the cans from the water, cool and store - you can store these for up to a few months!

An unusual bonus comes from storing these tins over a period. After some months sugar crystals begin to form in the toffee and you get crunchy banoffi - mmmmm.

PS. Please be careful when boiling the cans! Remember that as long as the water doesn't boil dry, there is no danger of them exploding!
